One of my New Years resolutions was to do something charitable at least once a month so over the past few months i've kept my eyes and ears open for opportunities to serve family, friends, and our community. I learned about a wonderful place called Baby Corner (located in Issaquah) from an ex-coworker and from the moment she told me about it I knew it was something I wanted to be involved in.
Since i'm no longer working part-time I decided that while I still need to take time out for myself each week, I also wanted to put some of that time towards helping others. So i signed myself up to work a shift (1.5 hours) each Monday night from April through May. Last night was my first shift. To by honest I was in a horrible mood all day but was still looking forward to getting to be a part of something so amazing and by the time I finished my shift I was in much better spirits.
Upon arrival I was given a tour of the entire warehouse. It was awesome! I wanted to cry after seeing all the amazing things that people had donated knowing that these wonderful things would really help children in our local communities. The warehouse was piled high with clothing, carseats, toys, books, diapers (they purchase and donate $6,000 worth of diapers each month!!!), baby formula, potty chairs, high chairs, and even school supplies (I was informed that many children who are pulled from their homes in domestic violence situations often times leave without their backpacks so the need for school supplies is great). After the tour I set out to help. One group of volunteers sorted through basket after basket of clean clothes and divided them into piles by gender and size. My group quickly picked up piles and then sorted them into the correct bins. A different group of volunteers will then fill orders from these bins on a different day. I was impressed to see many high school and middle school students there helping out. I wish I had taken the time in my teens to give back.
Baby Corner was founded 21 years ago by a Issaquah woman who worked as a pediatric nurse. She started Baby Corner out of her home and now it fills an entire warehouse. Each week Baby Corner fills about 700 orders for clothing, diapers, formula, and other essentials. If you are interested in donating goods, time, or money visit the link below to learn more.
**I spoke with the Program Manager to find out if there were any items that they were running low on and she said there is a great need for pants for boys and girls sizes 5T - 16. They also need boys shoes sizes 11-13. Anything you can give is a great help!
